Hello all,

Welcome to the Sandhurst Royal Military Academy, the last vestige of the original Star League's military training might.  We are a school made up of volunteer trainers and are not affiliated with any Clan, House, or Mercenary Group, although several of our trainers are.  The purpose of this college is to prepare you, a new player, with the information needed to reduce your learning curve and make you a valuable player should you choose to join any of the organized units in the game.

The RMA volunteers can be found here on the forums or on the multiplayer servers.  For a list of current volunteers, please check here. (http://forum.mechlivinglegends.net/index.php/topic,14673.0.html)

Our program is designed to give you a run through of the several different vehicle types, weapons types, and basic controls for Mechwarrior: Living Legends.  As you may have already noticed, the game is very intense and has more inputs than your basic First Person Shooter.  Our trainers volunteer their personal time to help you navigate the various huds, controls, and vehicles, and help you gain basic proficiency in each.  If you are interested in the first session curriculum outlined in the linked posting, please leave your online game name here as well as interest in any advanced trainings offered by specialist trainers.

Can instructors involved in the academy previously please state whether they can continue to offer training in the Instructors resources thread
 (http://forum.mechlivinglegends.net/index.php/topic,14673.0.html)

As per Cygmas suggestion: (http://forum.mechlivinglegends.net/index.php/topic,11348.msg236040.html#msg236040) This is a resurrection of the previous Sandhurst RMC (http://forum.mechlivinglegends.net/index.php/topic,11348.0.html), Many thanks to Cowboy (http://forum.mechlivinglegends.net/index.php?action=profile;u=10817) to setting it up, hopefully we can continue where he left off (or just fill in while he is on sabbatical ;)) and get more people involved and hooked on MWLL

I will also endeavour to get an entry into the wiki at some point

Latest Edit: Table repaired and modified to include specialisation and status
Edit: Also we need a crest! I knocked the one at the top of the post up quickly using crap applications (mostly Paint) Someone please do a better job :)
Edit (16/02/12) Cherno added to instructors list
Edit (07/09/12) added Mr_Gray and Raptor, removed Cygma :'(

I'm reducing my availability to "if no other suitable trainer has the time".

I still would be interested in a practice-session, but i don't feel like this is the right place for it (if any teacher thinks it is and he/she would be able to teach me something, i would be happy to join another lesson). Is there any more or less organized equivalent to this for players who know about the basics? Something like "meeting of average players to solidify certain skills"? And i do not mean a normal game, but something with a little more structure and predetermined parameters. E.g. i would love to practice 2vs1 (on both ends) but that would need not only two halfway decent players but also an empty server.
Anything like this around?

Its a good idea, when someone already knows the basics and wants to learn advanced techniques it is often better to teach "on the fly".  Basically, instructor watches student and offers up suggestions.  Could even be done with instructor watching student in a pub game.

We could try organising some more advanced sessions, perhaps between two opposing teams of students, then instructors (or anyone the students or instructors regard as knowledgeable) could spectate and offer any thoughts on advanced tactics that could be used.

Or we could do it Top Gun stylee with Trainees vs. Instructors (As long as I get to be Viper :D)

Edit: Also, who maintains/administers the Outreach TS3?  If we could get a channel, available instructors could just stay logged in to there when they are available, and students could ask them for training there and then

Nice suggestion, actually

Watching students perform in a pub environment is a quick and easy way too see what they have to work on

Doesn't sound bad. But nevertheless i would like to experience some focused training. This way you can effectively work on weaknesses you know about and don't have to rely on your opponent.
Take for example aiming: You obviously can train it in a pub-game but wouldn't a game solely dedicated to this purpose have much more effect and take a lot less time?

So I got the game running the other night (wow...3 hours of downloading, and i have a fiber connection!), and have some past experience with MW games.

I'm interested in enrolling as a Cadet and learning the ropes.   The last post in this thread is really old though.  Is this academy still a thing?

I'm leaving for vacation today so this wouldn't be until next week at the earliest but I figured I'd post now :)   I'm East Coast US and normally play online from 7pm to 11pm.

Is this a possibility?

I hereby offer my services as a human bot, i. e. taking lights and mediums without having the goal of killing new players in training, but to teach them mech combat 101.

I'm from the EU timezone though, but maybe we can get something started. If the Sandhurst organisator is willing to set up a training match, count me in as a light opposition.

The Academy's not really "a thing" anymore, but any or all of us would be willing to sit down with you and show you the ropes.  Best bet is to hop on the community TS3 (ts9.gameservers.com:9144) and see if you can find anybody in your current game.

Sorry, thought I'd replied to this, I promise I'll put some time into this soon.

I added Cherno to the list.  Best advice I can give is PM the guys in the list or look out for them on outreach TS and ask if they are available for a session.

Hi, I was kindly pointed to this thread to look for guidance as a newbie. :)

I see it looks a bit like the Academy is in hiatus. Nevertheless, here goes nothing.

I've spent two weeks on and off, getting to know the basics of MWLL and I'm proud to say I manage to not instantly die every time I leave the hangar! I can even do some damage occasionaly.

So, I'm looking for people to hook up with via Teamspeak or whatnot, to have a stab at actually voice-coordinating with teammates. I've been on the Outreach TS3 server, but I seem to always miss the busy times. My timezone is GMT+1, drop a line if you like.

What sort of time do you play?  If it's not during the day I can give you a bit of training.

If you see any of the people in the list on page one on outreach TS, just go say hi and ask if they are available for a session, they are a friendly bunch.

I guess I'm usually on later at night, roughly around 20:00 GMT, plus or minus an hour. Sometimes later than that.
Thanks for the welcome, I'll have a look out for you guys!

Yes, please.  I'll take anything you care to divulge.  Getting nowhere trying to figure it out myself.  Don't know how to practice this game.  Keep dying way too much.

Yes, please.  I'll take anything you care to divulge.  Getting nowhere trying to figure it out myself.  Don't know how to practice this game.  Keep dying way too much.

One of the aspects a lot of new players struggle with is that standing still makes your aim better, but standing still makes you vastly easier to hit.

You can always run your own server and join it locally, or join one of the servers that has nobody on it at the moment, and practice practice practice just running around and aiming at stuff.

Jump jets take a bit of practice.  Holding W or S will move you forward or backward in the direction you're looking (torso rotation), not the direction your feet are travelling.

When playing on a live match, feel free to let your team know that you're new and open to advice.  Also, ask if anybody wants a wingman, take a non-LRM mech, and just follow along behind them and do whatever they do.

When your team looks like it's retreating, you should retreat (even if you don't know why) and regroup.

Tracked vehicles are currently getting stuck on all sorts of things.  Until this gets adjusted (next patch?) I would avoid them as it's very frustrating and easy to have happen.

Don't get suckered chasing people deep into their territory unless you're fine with getting killed for it.

Expect to die a lot.

Greetings POTENTIAL STUDENTS NAME,

Thank you for your interest in Royal Military Academy Sandhust.

I am afraid I am temporarily unavailable due to sickness/prison/travel/war

Please direct any questions to your preferred instructor on the main page, or ask around at the outreach TS3 channel.

I am decent at killstealing hit and run tactics or usage of heavy and assault mechs.
