I'm a tad concerned about the PSU, after a short google I found it is rated at 440W, and is not 80+ rated at all. My guess is that you're pulling too much over the 12V rail. The combined power rating and 12V rating is making my spidey-sense tingle. It should be ok, but my gut says that. Maybe ask a friend to borrow their's for a swap for known good.

So are you running the same drivers you ran for the past 2 or 3 years? And the GPU can easily be bad if you managed to blow out something with ESD. But a bad driver is probably a more likely issue than ESD.

I did run the same drivers at first...

And what you say about ESD... well...
I do wear special shoes at work that are meant to prevent any ESD, and I WAS wearing them while swapping the parts.
Nevertheless, it's of course not impossible...

 :o

There's a pretty big "80+ certified" Logo on the package  :o

Problem is: I don't HAVE any nearby friends who do much more than "facebook" and "twitter" with their PCs, so their PSUs are DEFINITELY underrated for my PC. :/

About the stressing GPU part, did you tried any of those I mentioned? FurMark or OCCT? You get the same 3-5 minutes crash?
Tools and I:
   - MWLL Online Launcher (LAN UDP Forwarder) - evolution of past "Le Proof of Concepto" project: connect without Gamespy via packet redirection;
   - Vehicle Browser - "Pocket Wiki" ©okaolias (not really that though);
   - Rconnect 4.3 - Server tools: map manager/player voting add-ons;
   - CryHammer - Validates Patch/CDKey of Crysis Wars (now unable to validate CDKey due to turned off Gamespy servers).

I tried Furmark, which ran fine several times (if you discount the fact that I only got 9FPS on highest settings).
I tried 3Dmark which freezes within seconds of the render sequence starting.

So apparently it's not "stress" that causes these crashes but maybe a certain 'feature' that has become more common in recent years that my card just can't do well (or at all)?

The worst part in all this is that I DID plan to buy a new graphics card soon (am aware of its outdated-ness), but I won't spend any more money on this computer unless I know that it will work afterwards.

Yeah, you'd had to have a spare lying around to make sure.

Someone somewhere suggested to monitor the 12V rail Voltage while stressing the GPU, so I did...
the results:

Idle (=highest): 12.30V
Working (various old-ish games): 12.21V
Full load (Tomb Raider 2013, Furmark): 12.19V
Lowest: 12.18V

Freezes happened anywhere between 12.21V and 12.18V

I'm no expert on computer electronics, but to me these look fine.

Check all the outputs, and also check them for AC as well. AC should be zero or very close to it. Sometimes under load the PS can't filter out all the AC from the switching and you start to get noisy DC outputs which can crash things as well.

Either way, if you're thinking of upgrading your GPU eventually, a bigger PS is a good idea. I remember someone posting you had a 440W one. There was a time when that was plenty powerful, but nowadays it's not. Look for something in the >=700W range. You can get a decent Thermaltake or Coolmax from newegg in that power range for $70 or so. Modern CPUs and mobos and GPUs can really suck down the juice and if your new Mobo / CPU combo are pulling enough power on either 5 or 12v rails then it's possible noise is going up and crashing things under load. And if you're planning on building a faster machine then a more powerful PS is a good first purchase anyway.

The OEM Great Wall has a less than stellar past and the rating was listed as "pending" according a review site. I'd stick with trusted brands like seasonic and silverstone (and the ones they supply to corsair). Or anything from here

I noticed today that my hard drive seems to be faulty... could that be the cause?
(gonna need to exchange it either way, so I'll find out in a few days, but still would like everyone's thoughts on this...)

What makes you think the drive is faulty?

What makes you think the drive is faulty?

When trying to access the drive via "my computer" it sometimes makes an ugly metallic noise, then windows explorer 'stops responding', then I task manager kill windows explorer, then, upon re-opening "my computer" the drive is no longer in the list, and only restarting the whole computer makes it reappear.

Ouch, that sounds ugly... I'm guessing this isn't the system drive? It might be causing issues, I suggest you swap for known good. This is going to be a long process of re-installs and pulling hardware out. Lock ups can be a pain to diagnose. If you don't have spares lying around or the time you may want to get a quote from a PC repairer to get it sorted out so you don't replace something that isn't the root cause.

Soooo... my new hardware arrived today (new HDD and a cheap-ish video card)

And... guess what? No more freezes with the new card (the HDD alone didn't help with that.)

And the GPU can easily be bad if you managed to blow out something with ESD.

I guess this is what happened...
